A Very Special Birthday

It’s been a birthday-filled week for us at camp, but today’s birthday is extra special. Today we toast to one of the incredible women at the heart of Rise Up – to the glue that holds this place together – to our dear friend and our manager, Marcia.

We started celebrating a little prematurely – and have already spent a good two-days nursing hangovers from an epic night of Greek-inspired shenanigans – but in our opinion, there could never be a party big enough, nor celebration grand enough, to truly show Marcia how much she means to us all.

Some call her Mamcita (much to her dismay) because even though she has the tough job of keeping everyone in line, she is very much a nurturer at heart. It doesn’t matter what stresses occupy her day-to-day, she will always make time for you or your problems and whether it’s a hug you need or just a good laugh, she’ll provide them in excess.

Whether you know it or not, when you’re a guest at Rise Up, she’s the one that organizes your trip from start to finish. She’s the one answering emails, following up with calls, preparing transfers, receiving special requests and organizing list after list of things that are essential to the operations here (honestly…SO MANY LISTS!! She even dreams (or has nightmares) about lists sometimes.) When she leaves on vacation or goes home to Switzerland during the slower months, her presence is sorely missed. And not just because she is amazing at her job, but because she brings an energy and authenticity to the camp that is so rare to find.

If you’ve stayed with us before, you’ll know what we are talking about when we try to describe the honesty and warmth with which she greets every single person. Perhaps it’s a slight advantage that she is fluent in 4 or 5 languages, but it seems there is no cultural barrier that she cannot bridge, nor difference in personality that she cannot overcome. Whoever you are or wherever you’re from, staff or guest, she’ll find a way to connect with you that doesn’t feel forced or insincere – and you get the feeling that you’ll be friends with her for life.

So to the woman that brings us all together with her caring hugs and contagious laughter, we want to wish you a very happy birthday. You’re mamacita to us, not because you’re another year older, but because you care so deeply for everyone in your life. We’re so blessed that you continue to return to Rise Up to help run the ship, and although you may not hear it everyday, we’re well aware that this place wouldn’t run as smoothly without you (and Salsa night would be an absolute bore.) We love you Marcia and we’re so grateful for all that you do and all that you are to each of us x

Alles Gute zum Geburtstag! Feliz cumpleaños! Feliz Aniversário! Happy Birthday!
