How to Stay in Retreat Mode After Leaving Rise Up: Daily Rituals

This article is part of a series on how to keep your retreat gains once you return home. The goal of the series is to help you maintain a retreat mindset and integrate the lessons learned into your daily life. Read our first article of the series here.

So you’ve just had an incredible week riding waves, eating fresh meals prepared by gourmet chefs and living your best surf life.

But then you get home and BAM!

Emails, chores, traffic, distractions.

Life hits you like an icy wave to the face on a frosty winter morning.

Suddenly, all those promises, all those “I’m definitely gonna…” convictions made at Rise Up start slipping away.

It’s an all too real situation, but here’s the good news: you don’t have to lose that spark.

With a few simple rituals, you can carry that retreat feeling into your everyday life and keep the momentum going strong!

We spoke with past Rise Up guests and asked about their tips for maintaining that sense of balance, joy and purpose once they got home.

From journaling to mindful meals, here are their favorite ways for maintaining rituals long after the trip ends!

8 tips for keeping your Rise Up daily rituals intact

8. Start your day with intention

Remember how you started your mornings at Rise Up… calm, focused and ready to soak it all in?

Bring that same energy home.

Take a few quiet minutes when you wake up to set an intention. Like surfing, it can rewire your brain for the better.

Whether it’s gratitude, presence or patience, this little ritual keeps you anchored no matter how far you are from the beach.

Try this:

  • Write one intention in your journal
  • Spend 5 minutes breathing mindfully and meditating on said intention
  • Stay off social media until mid-morning… give your mind time to settle!

7. Take time to unplug

Life back home often means more screen time, whether we like it or not.

But just because you can no longer watch the surf from our beachside pool or admire a sunset from your hammock, doesn’t mean you can’t unplug!

Schedule time every day to step away from technology.

Go for a walk in the park, stretch in your living room or simply enjoy a cup of tea or coffee without distractions.

These little breaks help you reconnect to that grounded feeling you had on the mat or in the surf.

Try this:

  • Put your phone in another room for an hour
  • Watch the sunrise or sunset without screens
  • Take a mindful walk, noticing every detail around you
  • Have a no-screens-after-8pm rule

6. Stay connected to your community

Rise Up buddies aren’t just flash-in-the-pan relationships.

The friendships our guests form (and hopefully you form too!) when paddling out together and sharing long yoga sessions are worth holding onto.

Stay in touch with your fellow retreat guests (through our Whatsapp group for past guests).

Swap stories, check in on your goals and cheer each other on. You can even arrange another Rise Up trip in the near future!

This is especially helpful if you don’t have a local surf or yoga community back home.

Rise Up can be the group that lifts you up. Because feeling connected helps you stay inspired, no matter where you live.

Try this:

  • Join our Rise Up Whatsapp group
  • Plan a virtual yoga session with your Rise Up buddies
  • Share your wins and challenges to the group regularly

5. Keep learning

Just because you’re not on retreat doesn’t mean the learning stops!

Keep exploring. Take an online yoga class. Try a meditation app or learn about surf fitness even if you’re miles from the beach.

Staying curious fuels your passion and reminds you that growth happens every day, not just when you’re traveling.

Try this:

  • Watch surf documentaries for inspiration
  • Read a book about surfing, mindfulness or nutrition
  • Sign up for a short course in something new

4. Create a calming space

At the retreat, your surroundings helped you feel centered and at ease.

You can recreate a little of that vibe at home!

Add plants, candles or photos of the ocean to your space. Keep a corner just for your yoga mat or meditation cushion.

Even if you live in a small apartment, these simple touches can bring back the calm of salty air and sunlit mornings. Speaking of, did somebody say ocean-scented candle?

Try this:

  • Create a small altar with shells, stones or meaningful objects
  • Play calming ocean sounds in the background
  • Use essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus

3. Make meals an act of self-care

Remember those colorful, fresh meals shared after surf sessions?

Yeah… they’re really hard to forget.

The good news is that while you might not have a gourmet chef on hand, you can still try bringing that same love to your own kitchen.

Choose whole foods that nourish you and make time to really enjoy every bite. You don’t have to be a world-class chef. Simple recipes prepared with care can still feel special.

Besides, when you slow down and treat meals as self-care, eating becomes a grounding ritual that keeps you connected to your body.

Try this:

  • Try a new smoothie bowl recipe each week
  • Eat without your phone or TV
  • Prep fresh snacks you can grab on busy days

2. Move your body every day

You might not have waves outside your door, but you can still move in ways that remind you of the ocean and the mat.

Roll out your yoga mat for a morning flow, do surf-inspired workouts or go for a walk to clear your head.

Moving your body daily helps you feel strong, centered and energized. It doesn’t have to be long… just consistent.

Try this:

  • Schedule 15 minutes of movement first thing
  • Practice yoga poses that build balance and strength
  • Dance or stretch when you need a boost
  • You can even try an ancient Shaolin movement routine… whatever you want, just move!

1. End your day with gratitude

Before bed, take a moment to reflect on what felt good. Even when you’re far from the ocean, there’s always something to appreciate…

A chat with a friend, a nourishing meal, a quiet moment of calm.

Gratitude isn’t just a nice idea. Research shows it helps you sleep better and wake up feeling more positive

Keep a little journal by your bed and jot down three things you’re grateful for. This simple ritual can end your day on a peaceful note, just like those quiet nights at the retreat.

Try this:

  • Write 3 things that made you smile today
  • Reflect on one way you stayed true to yourself
  • Set an intention for tomorrow

Final thoughts

Be gentle with yourself as you find your rhythm again.

Keeping up new habits isn’t always easy, especially when you return to a busy life.

Just remember, you don’t have to do it perfectly. Even small moments, whether it’s five minutes of quiet breathing, a simple meal prepared with care or a short walk in fresh air, can make a real difference.

At Rise Up, we’ve seen firsthand how these daily rituals help people feel more balanced, energized and connected.

We also know that over time, small choices will build into something powerful.

It might be easy for us to say, but it still rings true: you don’t need the ocean right outside your door to stay inspired. You already have everything you need to carry that feeling forward.

Just take it one day at a time.
