Two surfers looking at the waves in Costa Rica

What Is a Surf Retreat (And Is It Right for You)?

You’ve seen the Instagram shots and reels.

A group of people laughing on a sun-drenched beach. Boards lined up. Someone mid-wave, arms wide open. A long table with good food and even better company.

And somewhere at the back of your mind, you’ve thought… why not me?

If you’ve been wondering what a surf retreat actually is and whether it’s the kind of trip that suits you, you’re in the right place.

Let’s break it down properly.

So… what actually is a surf retreat?

A surf retreat is a structured travel experience where surfing is the heartbeat of the week, but far from the only thing going on.

Unlike booking a random Airbnb near a beach and figuring it out as you go, a surf retreat (like ours!) takes care of the logistics.

Accommodation, meals, coaching and a community are all built in. The whole week is designed so you can just show up and enjoy it. No heavy lifting. Just roll in and live it up.

Most retreats run between five and ten days across a range of locations… from the jungle-fringed surf breaks of Costa Rica and Nicaragua to the warm water lineups of Bali and beyond.

You typically surf once or twice a day with guidance from experienced coaches. The rest of your time is yours… whether that means yoga, exploring, siestas in a hammock or swapping stories over dinner.

At Rise Up, we run surf and yoga retreats because the two genuinely complement each other.

Yoga builds the flexibility, balance and body awareness that make catching waves click faster. And after a big day in the ocean, nothing resets you quite like a proper yoga session and a moment to breathe.

Who goes on surf retreats?

Here’s something that surprises most first-timers: the mix of people is broader than you’d expect.

You’ve got complete beginners who’ve never stood on a board. People who surfed a little years ago and want to pick it back up. Intermediate surfers working with a coach to level up their skills. And people who’ve been surfing for years but just love the vibe.

The common thread isn’t skill level. It’s the desire for a different kind of travel.

Something more meaningful than a standard holiday. Something that involves a bit of challenge, a lot of connection and a landscape that makes you feel genuinely alive.

Beginners are absolutely welcomed. And in many ways, the whole experience is built for them. You won’t be thrown into deep water (figuratively speaking).

You’ll have surf coaching from people who know how to take you from zero to riding waves at a pace that feels good, not overwhelming. All-inclusive surf retreats like ours mean you don’t have to figure any of it out on your own.

Not sure what level you’re at? We’ve put together a straightforward guide to help you figure out your surf level before you arrive.

What does a typical day actually look like?

Every retreat has its own rhythm, but here’s roughly how a day unfolds at Rise Up.

Mornings

  • You wake up to warm air and the sound of the ocean
  • There’s usually a morning yoga session before anyone touches a surfboard. It wakes up your body and primes your mind for learning
  • Then breakfast, where you’ll start to get a feel for the group

Midday

  • Mid-morning is surf time
  • You head to the beach with your coach, who’s already scoped out the best surf spots and conditions for your level
  • There’s a surf theory session and land practice first… pop-ups, timing, reading the break
  • Then you paddle out together
  • Your coach is in the water with you this entire time
  • Watching your technique, calling out feedback, helping you catch waves you’d have missed on your own
  • It’s not a surf camp with twenty people where you get five minutes of attention. It’s small, intentional and actually effective

Afternoon/Evening

  • After surfing there’s usually lunch, some free time, maybe a second surf session in the afternoon
  • Or an optional yoga class in the open-air studio
  • Evenings are relaxed… good food, good conversation
  • Maybe a sunset that makes you stop whatever you’re doing just to look at it

The stuff that surprises people

Ask anyone who’s done a surf retreat what they didn’t expect and the answers are almost always the same.

How quickly you improve. With proper surf lessons, surf coaching and consistent time in the water, the progress is real and visible. You’ll look back at where you were on day one and genuinely not recognise yourself. Guests return year after year for exactly this reason.

Surfers having fun in the water

How quickly you connect with people. There’s something about shared vulnerability… all of you trying something hard, falling, getting back up, cheering each other on. That kind of experience accelerates friendship fast.

By day three, strangers feel like people you’ve known for years.

How good you feel in your body. The perfect combination of surfing, yoga, fresh food and salt water does something to you. You sleep better. You feel more present. The mental noise that follows you around at home starts to fade. It’s wellness in the most natural sense… no spa required.

Is it right for you? A few honest questions.

A surf retreat isn’t the right trip for everyone. It’s worth being honest with yourself before you book.

Do you want to learn something new, or just relax?

If you want a purely passive holiday, a retreat might feel like a lot. There’s structure, early mornings and physical effort involved. But if you’re someone who finds meaning in growth, this kind of trip delivers.

Are you open to a group setting?

Retreats are social by nature. You’ll share meals, surf sessions and downtime with people you’ve never met. For a lot of people, that’s the best part. But it’s worth knowing in advance.

Do you need everything figured out before you go?

If having accommodation, meals, coaching and logistics all sorted from the start sounds like a relief rather than a limitation, you’ll love the retreat format.

Are you comfortable being a beginner in front of others?

The answer is usually yes, once you realise everyone around you is on the same journey. But it’s worth checking in with yourself.

A bit about us

We’ve been running surf and yoga retreats since 2009.

That’s not something we mention to sound impressive. It’s relevant because it means everything we do has been shaped by years of real guest experiences and real feedback.

We operate out of two destinations: Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

Both offer warm water, consistent waves and the kind of natural surroundings that make you feel genuinely far from your normal life. Each retreat is small by design, with a team that knows the coastline, the conditions and the nuances of teaching surfing to people at every level.

Our coaches aren’t just good surfers. They’re trained teachers who understand how to create an environment where people actually feel comfortable pushing their limits. You can read more about how we coach surfing.

We’re also proud to hold a consistent five-star rating on TripAdvisor! It’s something that’s been built one guest experience at a time over more than fifteen years. The reviews are worth reading if you want an honest picture of what to expect from a week with us.

FAQ

Q. Do I need any surfing experience to join a surf retreat?

Nope. Most surf and yoga retreats, including ours, are designed to welcome complete beginners. You’ll get proper surf lessons from day one and progress at your own pace, whatever your skill level.

Q. How fit do I need to be?

Reasonably active helps, but you don’t need to be an athlete. Surfing uses muscles you probably don’t use much day to day, so expect some soreness early in the week. The yoga sessions help with recovery more than you’d think.

Q. Will I actually improve, or just splash around?

With good coaching and daily time in the water, the improvement is real and often faster than people expect. Most guests go from zero to catching waves within the first couple of days.

Q. What if I don’t click with the group?

It happens rarely, but the honest answer is that shared experience in the water tends to bring people together quickly. Most guests are surprised by how fast genuine connection forms.

Q. Is a surf retreat worth the cost compared to a normal holiday?

That depends on what you value. If you want growth, connection, coaching and everything taken care of, a retreat delivers a lot for what you pay. If you just want to lie on a beach, a normal holiday is probably fine.

Adventure, connection and a bit of wellness built in

The best surf retreats aren’t just about learning to surf. They’re about stepping outside your normal life and into something that requires your full attention.

The ocean has a way of doing that. You can’t be distracted when you’re paddling out through a breaking wave. You can’t be on your phone when you’re trying to read the water.

You have to be there. Completely present. And that presence spills over into the rest of your week in ways that are hard to describe until you’ve felt it.

We’ve spent over fifteen years refining what a surf retreat can be.

Not just a holiday with a surfboard, but a week that genuinely changes something. In how you move, how you connect with people, how you feel in your own skin. That’s what keeps guests coming back… and what we think makes Rise Up worth considering for your first retreat or your fifth.
